Volunteer Spotlight: Mary’s Impact at the Military Lounge Supporting Service Members

It’s been years, but the memory feels as fresh as yesterday. I was moving across the country for a new job, uncertain when I’d see my childhood home again. The emotions were overwhelming—fear, sadness, loneliness. Sound familiar? Many of us have been there at some point. But I also remember the joy of returning home—my mom waiting at the door, the aroma of my favorite meals filling the house, and the comforting embrace of my old couch. I was 12 years old again for a moment—safe, happy, and at peace.

I share this because it reminds me of HOPE’s Volunteer of the Month, Mary Battocletti. Mary is a beacon of comfort for service members experiencing similar emotions in the Hope For The Warriors Military Lounge at Jacksonville Airport. Like a mama bear, she welcomes them with a smile, a snack, and a slice of home, reminding them they’re never alone.

As you enter the HOPE Military Lounge, you’ll find Mary bustling about, ensuring everything is perfect for the incoming men and women in uniform. From setting up snacks to offering camaraderie, Mary does it all. “To me, it’s like opening up your kitchen, and the kids come in, and they like to get their snacks and hang out,” Mary explains with a laugh. Her approach is simple yet profound—create a friendly atmosphere where service members can unwind and feel relaxed.

Mary’s connection to the military runs deep, with a family filled with service members. Her two sons, son-in-law, and even granddaughters serve, which fuels her passion for volunteering. Mary expressed, “I’m going to treat these kids [that visit the Lounge] the same way I want my kids to be treated.” Her nurturing spirit shines through as she recounts these sentiments, making the HOPE Military Lounge a comforting space akin to home.

Volunteering at the lounge isn’t always bustling with activity, but Mary knows that the simple act of being present makes all the difference. “The doors are open, they’re appreciated… just someplace to chill on the couch and hang out,” she said. Even when only a few people come through, the impact of the lounge remains unchanged. It offers service members a crucial space to relax and catch their breath amid their often-hectic schedules.

Despite her reluctance to single out specific memories, Mary cherishes each interaction, especially with visiting veterans. One poignant moment involved a Vietnam veteran who thanked her for keeping the lounge open for service members like him. “It’s nice that they feel comfortable enough to come in,” she shared, highlighting the importance of the HOPE Military Lounge for those who walk through its doors.

With the lounge’s undeniable impact comes a call to action for more volunteers. Mary notes the need for people willing to open the lounge for even just one shift a week. “It’s not all about us,” Mary encourages, emphasizing that the joy of volunteering lies in serving those who selflessly serve our nation.

In speaking with Mary, it’s clear that her volunteer work at the HOPE Military Lounge is more than a position—it’s a labor of love. As a mama bear to her visiting “cubs,” Mary’s warmth and hospitality embody the heart of what it means to support veterans and the military community. Her dedication ensures visitors leave with more than a full stomach or a new friend; they leave with a comforting reminder of the kindness and support that follows them, no matter where they are.

This volunteer story truly captures the spirit of the Hope For The Warriors Military Lounge, thanks to Mary’s commitment to welcoming each individual as if they were family. Her enthusiasm for volunteering is infectious, leaving all of us inspired to make a difference, however slight, in the lives of those who protect our freedom every day
