Every Team HOPE athlete has a story. They remind us of the strength, heart, and determination our community brings to each mile. This July, we’re excited to highlight Marine Corps veteran, dedicated runner, and incredible Team HOPE member Craig Sims as our Athlete of the Month.
Craig served in the United States Marine Corps for 13 years, reaching the rank of E6, and deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Like many veterans, transitioning away from the structure and pace of military life presented unique challenges. But for Craig, it also opened a door to something greater, a renewed focus on health, community, and purpose. “Like many veterans, we are not the first to immediately look for help and support. It has been ingrained in us to push through, you will be just fine. That is not always true,” Craig said.
With the encouragement of a fellow veteran, Craig discovered HOPE For The Warriors. What he found wasn’t just a program; it was a mission he could align with. “I looked into it, and it fit right in line with my physical health goals. So, I reached out to the staff and was made aware of the resources that they have available to veterans and introduced me to other veterans with similar goals and aspirations.”
Craig recently represented Team HOPE at the Nashville Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, proudly running with a HOPE jersey that had the star symbol in bold. The experience was more than just a race; it was a milestone of progress, support, and connection. “The support has been just amazing. Being able to have support while pursuing some of these physical goals is very important to me. Finances can really present an unavoidable barrier to reaching your goals. Hope For The Warriors is there to support in whatever way they can. I have had the best experience with this organization and am happy to wear the star.”
One thing that really stands out to Craig — the people. The Team HOPE community brings more than just training plans and gear; it brings the energy and encouragement of fellow veterans walking (and running) similar paths. “The community is really one to be admired. Being around my fellow vets is always a good feeling. You realize that others are making their way, just as you are. Seeing that logo while on the course and having that unspoken connection is like no other,” Craig emphasized. “Whenever I see that star, I immediately adjust my path to engage with that person in some way. We inspire each other to keep pressing forward; we all run differently. However, we all have the same goal, to cross that finish line with our heads held high.”
Craig’s journey reminds us of what Team HOPE is all about: wellness, connection, and lifting each other up. His dedication to both personal goals and his fellow veterans is what makes him such a valuable part of our team.
We’re proud to recognize Craig Sims as our Athlete of the Month, and even more proud to run beside him.
