JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (June 18, 2025) – The 16th Annual Oorah vs. Hooah Fishing Battle was won by the U.S. Marine/Navy team recently, giving Team Oorah bragging rights for the year.
Hope For The Warriors and Dr. Richard Weisler hosted the annual offshore fishing tournament for 28 service members/veterans, pitting a team of Marines and sailors against a team of soldiers on the Vonda Kay out of Carolina Beach.
The tournament title is awarded to the team landing the largest fish. The Marine/Navy team took home the “win” with the largest fish, caught by U.S. Navy veteran Travis Reither, a 32-pound Cobia. The Marine/Navy team also brought in around 70-75 fish, but it wasn’t who won or lost that made the day a success for all that participated.
“Everyone had a fantastic time, and the crew enjoyed themselves as well and said this is the event they look forward to most each year,” said Lee Bonar, U.S. Marine veteran and HOPE’s director of military relations. “Andrew, a Marine veteran, and his son, Cordin, brought in the four largest fish, and it was a touching real father/son moment.”
Founded in 2006, HOPE connects post 9/11 veterans, service members and military families with services that range from critical needs assistance to career and financial coaching to forging community connections through physical activity, caring for mental health and offering peer support.
“Peer support remains one of the most powerful tools we can offer to both active-duty service members and veterans,” said Robin Kelleher, founder and CEO of Hope For The Warriors. “Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Richard Weisler, this 18th annual fishing tournament offers more than just friendly competition—it fosters connection, healing, and a sense of belonging. These moments remind us all how vital community and camaraderie are to overall well-being.”
