Every month, Hope For The Warriors recognizes a Volunteer of the Month. It’s an honor earned by someone who goes above and beyond to embody HOPE and make a meaningful impact on our military community. As the Communications Manager, I have the privilege of speaking with these incredible individuals to learn about their motivation for volunteering. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job because, without fail, each conversation leaves me with a smile. What stands out the most is their humility. Time and time again, I hear phrases like, “It’s not about me,” or “I wish I could do more.” Of the dozens of volunteers I’ve spoken to, every single one would rather shine the spotlight on the veterans they serve than on themselves. I share this because it matters. Volunteering is a choice—one that not only changes lives but also warms the heart. As H. Brown Jackson Jr. once said, “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”
Since April is National Volunteer Month, we wanted to take this time to recognize and celebrate the dedicated individuals who give their time, energy, and passion to make a difference in the lives of others. At Hope For The Warriors, we are honored to work alongside incredible volunteers who embody the spirit of service, supporting service members, veterans, and military families across the nation.
In 2024, our volunteers made an extraordinary impact, demonstrating the power of collective effort and generosity. Their contributions helped us expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and create lasting change. Here’s a look at the incredible impact of HOPE volunteers this past year.

A New Space for Connection: The Military Lounge at Jacksonville, NC Airport
One of our most exciting milestones in 2024 was the opening of the Hope For The Warriors Military Lounge at the Jacksonville, NC airport in April. Designed as a welcoming space for service members and their families, the lounge provides comfort and respite during travel. Since its opening, we have welcomed over 2,700 visitors, and this vital resource is only possible thanks to volunteers like Chris and Kathy who keep it running seven days a week during high military travel times. Their commitment ensures that traveling service members have a space to rest, recharge, and connect with the HOPE community.
At HOPE, we know that volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. They are mentors, event organizers, caregivers, and advocates. They show up when needed most, ensuring that no service member, veteran, or military family is ever alone in their journey. Whether it’s through direct support, community outreach, or helping behind the scenes, their selfless service uplifts and empowers those who have sacrificed so much for our country.
Voices of HOPE: Volunteer Testimonials
Our volunteers are the heart of our mission, and their stories showcase the profound impact of service. Here’s what some of our dedicated volunteers have to say about their experiences:
“My ‘why’ for volunteering is always the same, the gratitude of our service members, veterans and families far exceeds the effort of my time.” – Michael, Jacksonville events and Hope Military Lounge volunteer
“I really enjoy helping and talking with our military veterans of all ages. The new recruits need snacks and a comfortable place to go along with some guidance getting to their new duty station. The veterans love somewhere to hang out and also get snacks and water while waiting on their flights or loved ones to come in.” – Betty, Jacksonville volunteer
“I’ve always said this is my way of paying it forward. I’ve worn the uniform for 32 years, seen combat and never been injured. It’s the least I can do.” – Tom, River Landing and HOPE Lounge volunteer
“To serve is an act of love, when you express love your universe responds overwhelmingly. I serve because my life depends on it! Love life enough to open up your journey.” – Antoinne, Marine veteran, Jacksonville volunteer
“I volunteer with HOPE because I want to spread joy in my community. I want people to feel recognized and appreciated for what they have done.” – Alexandra, Virtual Volunteer, Thank You Cards
“I grew up during the aftermath of 9/11 and
during the Global War on Terror. I’ve seen what these men and women go through and how many of them do not receive the recognition and help they deserve. I knew one way or another I would serve in honor of these brave people. So slowly I started to think of ways to help. Come to 7th grade, my great grandma who had volunteered raising service dogs and worked at a shelter (which housed many homeless vets) passed away. I began getting more involved and started reaching out to veterans’ organizations and I began speaking out about the issues our servicemen and women face in and out of the military. Slowly I started to also get more comfortable with speaking up, as I was once really, really shy. I really ramped up my ideas after the withdrawal from Afghanistan and saw how these men and women reacted to it. I saw a homeless veteran of the Afghanistan War who had been struggling with a disability, the ability to get a job or even access to healthcare. By the time I was in 10th grade I began reaching out to Congress. Today I am still working on getting better care for these men and women. I am volunteering with HOPE to make that change.” – Preston, Virtual Volunteer, ‘Thank You’ calls
”“Volunteering with Hope for the Warriors reminds me that gratitude is powerful, by connecting with donors, I can help amplify their impact, honoring those who serve and ensuring they receive the support they deserve.”
– Jessica, Virtual volunteer, donor ‘thank you’ calls
