Breaking New Ground: Leslie Becomes the First Graduate of the Riding For Warriors Scholarship Fund

For Leslie Blankenship, 2024 has been a year of transformation and perseverance. As the first graduate of the Riding for Warriors Scholarship Fund sponsored by Hillmann Consulting and Michael Nehlsen, her story is about resilience, dedication, and hope for the future.

Returning to class at the start of 2024 was exciting and challenging for Leslie. “It’s a lot because I work full time too, so I’m trying to balance that and the class load,” she shared. In addition to working full-time, Leslie was also juggling the responsibilities of raising her 11-year-old daughter and supporting her husband, Brandon, a veteran living with traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

Before receiving the scholarship, Leslie worked two jobs, including night shifts at a hospital, to cover her education expenses. “The VA helps pay for some of it, but it doesn’t take care of everything,” she explained. Books, supplies, and other costs added up quickly. However, after being awarded the Riding for Warriors Scholarship, Leslie was able to leave her second job, easing the burden and allowing her to focus more on her studies and family.

“This has been huge. I can’t even describe the weight that’s been lifted,” Leslie said. “Now I can focus on school, care for my daughter, and support my husband. It’s been life-changing.”

When Leslie received the call informing her that she had been selected for the scholarship, emotions overwhelmed her. “I cried,” she admitted. “Everything is working out. I’ve been in nursing for 17 years and wanted to return to school to finish my RN, but life kept getting in the way. Now, it’s finally happening.”

Brandon shared her excitement, recognizing this opportunity’s positive impact on their family. “He was extremely excited,” Leslie said. “It’s hard for me to leave him alone for long periods, so I worked night shifts. But this scholarship has reduced the stress for both of us.”

Leslie’s daughter has been by her side throughout the journey, witnessing the dedication and perseverance required to succeed. “She’s watched me struggle, and I think it’s a good thing because she’s learning that not everything worth having is easy,” Leslie shared. “She even helps me with my online classes by recording and editing my videos. It’s been a fun bonding experience for us.”

Leslie officially graduated in December of 2024, marking a significant milestone. Transitioning from an LPN to an RN opens new doors, broadening her career opportunities and increasing her earning potential. “As an LPN, I’m limited in what I can do. But as an RN, I can go anywhere and do anything,” she said. “I can also advance in my current job as a case manager for the state of Florida.”

Graduating with honors is a testament to Leslie’s hard work and perseverance. “I’m really surprised I made honors,” she said. “It feels surreal to be at the finish line.”

Leslie credits much of her success to the unwavering support from Hope For The Warriors and her program coordinator, Kristy. “Kristy has been amazing. She’s guided me through the process, offering resources and encouragement every step of the way.”

Reflecting on her experience, Leslie sincerely appreciated Air Force Veteran Michael Nehlsen, the creator of the Riding for Warriors Scholarship fund. “A lot of times, caregivers are overlooked. It’s nice to know that Michael acknowledges the sacrifices we make.”

As Leslie prepares to take the next step in her career, she is a beacon of hope and inspiration for other military caregivers and veterans’ families. Her journey reminds us that incredible things are possible with determination, support, and opportunity.

Eligibility

Eligibility is based on a spouse or caregiver’s ability to show their post-9/11 service member or veteran sustained a combat-related injury and/or has a 100% permanent and total VA disability rating to include Individual Unemployability. The Hope For The Warriors Scholarship Program considers a combat-related injury to be an injury caused by armed conflict, hazardous duty, instrumentality of war, and simulated war.
