Hope For The Warriors is proud to recognize Michael Siringer, a 36-year-old Marine Corps veteran, as our Athlete of the Month this October. Originally from Ohio, Michael’s journey from a small town to becoming a standout marathon runner and Marine Corps representative is nothing short of remarkable.
Michael’s military career began in June 2012 when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 24. A long family tradition of service inspired him, as both his grandfathers and an uncle served in the military. However, his decision to join the Corps was a significant departure from his earlier plans of becoming a teacher. After attending Marietta College in Ohio, Michael had a variety of jobs, ranging from teaching to coaching and landscaping. Despite this, a deeper calling led him to enlist. “I don’t like being told I can’t do something,” Michael says. “I’m meant for doing something bigger than myself.”
Following basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, Michael’s military journey took him across the country, from California to Florida, and eventually to represent the Marine Corps internationally in marathons. As a member of the Marine Corps All-American Marathon team for seven years, Michael has competed all over the world, including in the UK. “Marines aren’t just the stereotypical thing you read about,” he explains, emphasizing the diversity and resilience of the Corps.
Michael’s connection with Hope For The Warriors began through Amanda Eason, a career planner for service members transitioning out of the military. Their shared passion for running and marathons quickly forged a bond, leading Michael to join Team HOPE. He’s set to compete in the upcoming San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll, with over 25 other HOPE athletes, marking another milestone in his athletic journey.
But Michael’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Injuries like torn quadriceps, a torn spine, and a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease might have slowed most people down. Not Michael. “There were moments when I questioned if I could still compete,” he admits. But when he crossed the finish line of a full-length race without walking, a new fire ignited within him. “I was overwhelmed with emotion—ecstatic, proud. That moment lit something inside me.”
Since then, that fire has only burned brighter. Just days after that race, Michael crushed his Marine Corps fitness test, clocking in an astonishing 18 minutes and 50 seconds for three miles. But that’s not enough for him. “Now that the fire’s lit, I’m not satisfied. I’m ready to compete at an even higher level.”
We’re honored to have Michael Siringer as part of our team at Hope For The Warriors and look forward to supporting him as he continues to push his limits. His story of resilience, determination, and passion truly reflects the spirit of Hope For The Warriors.
Congratulations, Michael, on being Team HOPE’s Athlete of the Month!
