When it comes to giving back to military families, few individuals embody the spirit of service and dedication, like Cyd Deathe, the Executive Director of the Marine Families organization. This December, Hope For The Warriors proudly recognizes Cyd as our Volunteer of the Month for her remarkable contributions to HOPE’s food distribution event in Tampa, which provided 250 bags of food to military families in need.
As military families lined up to receive food at the 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion Marine Corps Reserve Center, they may not have realized the extent of the effort that went into making the event possible. Cyd was instrumental in facilitating the event and ensuring its success by coordinating logistics and rallying support.
Reflecting on her involvement, Cyd shared, “We are co-helping Hope For The Warriors, providing a facility for them to distribute food to military families. We’ve got these 250 bags, and we’re just making sure they’re picked up easily and efficiently.” But her contributions didn’t stop there. From providing a U-Haul truck to enlisting the help of Marines to move the bags, Cyd’s efforts saved the day. “It was a lot of work, but we were happy to do it,” she added.
Cyd’s relationship with Hope For The Warriors runs deep. Her son was injured in Iraq in 2006, during the early days of the organization. “Hope For The Warriors did so much for my son and our family during his recovery,” she recalled. “That experience made it my personal mission to give back as much as possible to our military and veterans. The love and support we received during that time inspired me to continue helping others.”
Although the scars of war remain, Cyd channels her experiences into helping others. Her husband, Richard, a Vietnam veteran, has been by her side every step of the way, finding his own sense of healing through their shared efforts. Together, they’ve made it their mission to support initiatives like Toys for Tots and food distributions for military families.
Cyd is aware of many military families’ struggles, including food insecurity. “One in four military families are struggling with food insecurity in this country right now,” she noted. “It’s very sad but totally understandable. We see it daily, especially with junior Marines and their families.” Events like the Tampa Food Distribution are critical, not only for providing immediate relief but also for building connections within the community. “It’s not just about the food,” she explained. “It’s about showing support and letting families know people and organizations are ready to help. When they see that, they’re more likely to reach out when they need other assistance.”
For Cyd, the event’s success was a team effort. She admired the volunteers, including George MacClary, Don Devine, and Nourm Smyth, who helped set up and distribute the food. “They’re so inspiring,” she said. “Their energy and dedication are a joy to work with. They’ve been a huge motivation for me.”

Looking ahead, Cyd is optimistic about the program’s growth. “This is just the first year,” she said. “We’ve distributed 250 bags, and it will only get bigger. Events like this are so important, especially in places like Tampa, where military families need all the support they can get.”
Upon learning of her Volunteer of the Month nomination, Cyd was characteristically humble. “This is such a surprise and so sweet, but there are so many others much more deserving than me,” she said. “Even a small act of kindness at the right time can make a lasting difference. That’s what motivates me every day.”
Kate Dudley, Hope For The Warriors’ Communications Manager, praised Cyd’s tireless efforts. “Cyd and her team literally saved the day,” Kate said. “Her smile, energy, and commitment to helping military families were unforgettable.” Erin Lester, Head of Operations and Warrior Experience, added, “Cyd’s dedication to helping military families thrive is truly inspiring. HOPE is grateful for her partnership.”
Cyd’s story is a testament to the power of community and the importance of giving back. Her unwavering dedication to military families brings hope and inspiration for all. As we celebrate her contributions this December, we are reminded of the profound impact one can make when leading with compassion and purpose.
