PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. – Despite multiple challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic, the Town of Pine Knoll Shores was detoured but not derailed in its annual Kayak for the Warriors event.
The group fended off the challenges, changed directions and wound up raising $50,000 for military families.
The 13th Annual Kayak for the Warriors benefited Hope For The Warriors, a national nonprofit dedicated to restoring a sense of self, family and hope for veterans, service members and military families.
The usual three-day event turned into a one-day golf tournament, a new event to the annual lineup.
Since 2008, Kayak for the Warriors has raised over $650,000 benefiting Hope For The Warriors and its programs.
“Having to cancel two popular Kayak for the Warrior events this spring due to COVID certainly was disappointing and not what we wanted to do,” said Jean McDanal, Kayak for the Warriors event organizer. “However, we focused our energies on our newest event, a golf tournament that took place on May 29. Sunshine and smiles were the order of the day. Participants said it was a great tournament, and they look forward to next year. We are so thankful to all those who took part as well as all of our volunteers who made this such a successful event.”
Founded aboard Camp Lejeune, Hope For The Warriors is a national nonprofit that assists veterans, service members and military families with a variety of programming including clinical health and wellness, sports and recreation, and transition services.
“The Town of Pine Knoll Shores and its dedicated group of volunteers never cease to amaze us when supporting local military families,” said Robin Kelleher, co-founder and president of the nonprofit organization. “This year, the volunteers found a way to turn lemons into lemonade while having a successful, safe and fun event benefiting the veterans, service members and military families that we serve.”
