Recognized as a Newman's Own Award Winning Innovative Program for 2007

Past Wishes

The knowledge that Wishes can come true directly impacts the spirit of the warrior in addition to the families and communities that support them. To have an experience above and beyond their immediate needs. While disabilities are not a barrier in life, they can create some monumental hurdles. Priorities change and sometimes the small important wishes for life must be set aside. Beyond meeting immediate physical and emotional needs, A Warrior's Wish® fulfills a desire for quality of life beyond recovery and a quest for life gratifying endeavors.

Whether realizing a dream to go hunting, ride a bike again or own a home adapted to their specialized needs, it is the mission of Hope For The Warriors® to see that wounded warriors and their families are actively engaged.

Below are just some of the Wishes that have been granted by Hope For The Warriors® since 2006.

Making a House a Home

On Easter Sunday 2009, an Army Specialist's life changed forever when he became a quadruple amputee. Since that fateful day, he lived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for more than two years, endured multiple operations, and endless hours of physical and occupational therapy. During that time, a house on Staten Island was being built for him. Two organizations, The Stephen Siller Children's Foundation and Building Homes for Heroes, raised the monies necessary to build the house. Hope For The Warriors® stepped forward to furnish this hero's new home.

A Wish For Wings

Hope For The Warriors® was approached by a former pilot who lost a leg and was severely burned while serving overseas. During his years in rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center, he was sustained by a dream of flying again. In the summer of 2010, despite his severe injuries, he passed the FAA physical. He turned to us with his Wish--the funding to train and get licensed as a commercial pilot. We overwhelmingly approved his wish--and flew in the hero who pulled him from the wreckage to deliver the good news. This hero's dream has become a reality and he has already completed flight school.

Fulfilling a Promise

family

Due to extensive injuries caused by a mine explosion, this soldier was unable to marry his fiancé in the traditional church ceremony they desired. Instead, they married quickly in a civil ceremony while he was in rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. They now have three children: four-year-old twins and one three-year-old daughter. Happily devoted to each other and to their children, his Wish was to give his supportive wife a traditional church wedding. Hope For The Warriors® happily granted this Wish and the couple married before friends, family and God

Man's Best Friend

rufus

This Guardsman has no doubt who saved his and many of his fellow Guardsmen lives one night in February 2010. As the men tried to relax in their compound in Afghanistan, the three dogs they had adopted started to furiously bark. A suicide bomber was attempting to enter the barracks but was stopped by the relentless biting and barking of their dogs. The bomber finally gave up and detonated his explosives in the entryway. Five soldiers sustained injuries but none of the guardsmen died that night, thanks to the lifesaving actions of the dogs. Of their three companions, one dog died and the other two were injured and nursed back to health by the unit's medics. When our injured hero returned to his unit, one dog, Rufus, became his constant companion. His Wish was for the dog to be brought to the United States to live with him, his wife, and their new growing family. Hope For The Warriors® was happy to reunite our wounded warrior with his lifesaving friend.

A Hero's Welcome to a New Home

It is difficult to hold onto hope when the very home you depend on is lost. Yet that is exactly what happened to one warrior. After his humvee rolled over a roadside bomb, this Army Sergeant lost both legs and was suffering from severe head trauma. His mother usher to his bedside and while there, an undetected water leak destroyed their home. For two years, Hope For The Warriors® collaborated with a number of other organizations and corporations to not just repair the home, but to rebuild a home that would accommodate his injuries and engage this warrior's spirit of competition. The renovations included a workout room and endless pool to facilitate his rehabilitation. And when this hero and dedicated mother returned, a hero's welcome awaited them.

Peace in the Great Outdoors

family

Hunting has always been one of this soldier's favorite hobbies. However, due to the nature of his injuries, the newly wounded soldier sold all of his hunting gear. Two years later, he realized that hunting can still provide a peaceful, stress free activity. He applied to Hope For The Warriors® with the Wish for new hunting gear. After the Wish was granted, we went a step further. The service member was chosen for a private hunting trip as part of our new Outdoor Adventures program. Some of my injuries limit my mobility, but when I'm hunting, I'm at peace. Hope For The Warriors® was proud to grant this Wish and more.

A Wish for Restful Sleep

After two deployments to Iraq and surviving more than nine roadside bombs, this Army medic endured multiple back operations. In spite of these procedures, the soldier and his wife slept on a memory foam pad on their apartment floor because he was unable to find a comfortable and affordable mattress. His Wish was simple; he requested a Tempur-pedic bed. Hope For The Warriors® was happy to grant this Wish and help this hardworking warrior sleep easily.

Broken and Burdensome

Warrior on ATV

Hardly the way a Marine should feel at the age of 24. Yet, living with injuries that cause him daily pain, attending weekly physical and speech therapy sessions, and struggling to walk and even get out of bed had left this young Veteran feeling like he was a burden to his wife and children. In spite of these frustrations, he worked hard to rehabilitate from a rifle grenade attack and throughout his recovery, he kept a positive attitude knowing he was lucky to be alive. His Wish was for an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) so that he could once again enjoy the great outdoors with his children. Hope For The Warriors® granted this Wish knowing it would impact not just the spirit of the warrior but the spirit of his supportive family too.

Setting Goals to Inspire

Losing a leg after a combat mission to Afghanistan has not held this Air Force Reservist from keeping his day job. As a pilot for American Airlines, our wounded warrior is proud of his unique opportunity to inspire people who are overcoming disabilities and other obstacles. He wants his physical rehabilitation to inspire as well. After spending a year at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, he returned home to New Jersey to continue his recovery. However, the loving husband and father of three young children did not like the impact of his therapy schedule on his family. To increase their quality of life, he needed to bring his exercises into his home. His Wish was for exercise equipment so that he could complete most of his rehabilitation in his own home, surrounded by his wife and children. Always inspiring others, he also began to bike and run in charity events to raise awareness of wounded warriors.

Superbowl and a Super Wish

Wounded in Afghanistan in July 2007, this Army specialist almost lost his life. He has burns on nearly half of his body and suffered from smoke inhalation, paralysis of his vocal cords, and the amputation of all ten of his fingers. In spite of the long road to recovery, his spirits remained high for both himself and his fellow wounded heroes. His mother, knowing how much he loved football approached Hope For The Warriors® with a Wish request. She wanted her son to be able to attend Superbowl XLIII in 2009. With the generosity of Lawrence Petretti of Hunter Roberts Interiors of New York, this Wish was granted. Petretti offered him two tickets to this amazing game and Hope For The Warriors® paid for the plane tickets and other expenses. Hope For The Warriors® is proud to be a part of this Wish, lifting the spirits and hope of this warrior and his family.

A Companion and a Purpose

Finding a vocation and a new focus was difficult for this Marine Corps Sergeant. He suffered from multiple physical injuries including a shattered elbow, fractured hip, head and eye injuries as well as severe post traumatic stress disorder. In the words of his doctor, he was a 65-year old man at the age of 24. With traditional work difficult for him to pursue, his Wish was for short haired, full bred German Shepherd puppies. Hope For The Warriors® was glad to grant his Wish. The energetic puppies have provided the warrior with patient companionship at a time when he needed it most. In addition, he now had the means to enter the breeding business, giving him a new purpose and direction. By granting this Wish, Hope For The Warriors® was able to support a man and his family that have sacrificed so much.

A Wish for a Magical Vacation

In 2004, an IED ripped apart a vehicle, killing two and severely wounded this soldier. His lower right manible was removed and required multiple reconstructive surgeries to return the jaw to its full use. An eight-inch bar was put in his arm permanently to make up for the lost muscle and the shattered bone. As this soldier underwent numerous surgeries and rehabilitation, his wife attended and graduated from an online degree program, prepared to step into the role of family breadwinner. Through the years, their three children sacrificed so much for their father's health and recovery. This soldier's wife turned to Hope For The Warriors® after almost four years of constant medical treatment. Her Wish was for a family vacation before the oldest graduated from high school and was no longer at home. This Wish was granted and in December 2007, Hope For The Warriors® sent this family to Disney World for a full week.

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

In 2007, this young soldier lost part of his right leg when he was hit by an I.E.D. in Iraq. An avid golfer his entire life, he returned to the golf course to determine whether he would have to give up the sport he loved. He was assured that he could continue playing but would need customized golf clubs due to his height and the affects of his injury. When he considered the expense of the golf clubs and the needs of his family, he felt that the expense would be too much for his family. Then he turned to Hope For The Warriors® with his Wish. We purchased him a set of golf clubs suited for his stature and injury. In addition to providing this wounded hero the ability to play the game he loves, it also gives him quality time on the golf course with his young son.

A Healing Welcome Home

This young Marine's deployment was cut short just six weeks after he arrived in Iraq in 2006. Sustaining numerous internal injuries and losing both legs after stepping on an artillery shell, he faced a long road to recovery ahead. His Wish was to welcome his fellow Marines home to Camp Lejeune from their seven month deployment. Sunday, April 1, 2007 marked the first day he left the hospital since arriving the previous October. His Wish began when he was flown in a private jet to the airport in Jacksonville, NC. He was presented with a humvee of a wheelchair and provided handicap accessible quarters in the Warrior House™, a home built to suit the needs of physically impaired service members. This Marine greeted Alpha Company home on Monday, April 2, 2007 - proving that the camaraderie experienced with his Marines was just as therapeutic and key to his rehabilitation as his time in the hospital.

All-Terrain Mobility

While deployed to Iraq in 2004, this Marine came face to face with combat, sustaining two gunshot wounds to his head - one in his lower jaw and one above the eye. This incredibly critical situation called for the Marine's parents to be flown to Germany, as it was not expected he would survive. However, the Marine's never-ending fervor allowed him to be transported to the military hospital in Bethesda, MD just five days later. More than two years later, this Marine was able to go home to his family. To help with comfort in his new life, his parent's Wish was for an all-terrain wheelchair so that he could go outdoors and even go hunting again. Hope For The Warriors® was honored to grant this Wish, providing a specially designed wheelchair specific to the Marine's measurements and needs.
