on May 11, 2007, Shannon was awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award at the White House by President George W. Bush . Shannon was nominated by II MEF to be chosen as one of six military wives to receive the award on Military Spouse Day. The President recognized her for tackling personal adversity and using the experience to help others. "I want you all to know that your work is noticed, your work is appreciated, and your work inspires our nation," Bush said.

In November 2007, Shannon was awarded The Very Important Patriot (VIP) Award. The award is presented by the National Military Family Association (NMFA) in recognition of exceptional volunteers worldwide whose outstanding service contributes to improving the quality of life in their military and/or neighboring communities. Due to the challenges of the current pace of military operations, volunteers are playing an increasing role in providing support and stability in their communities.
